Sapphire is the September birthstone, and is the unusually blue variety of corundum. Sapphire may also be colorless, grey, black, or pinkish-orange. In the Orient, kings wore sapphire around their necks as defence from harm and is was thought that merely looking upon this stone would bring luck. Known as the 'Gem of Autumn', sapphires were regarded as powerful talismans of faith and good fortune.
